Trademark registration in United Arab Emirates

Prepare UAE trademark protection with the right owner, Arabic and Latin mark versions, local representation and separate examination, publication and registration stages.

The short answer

What should you know before filing in United Arab Emirates?

UAE trademark registration is a federal filing through MoET. It is distinct from establishing a company or reserving a trade name. A registration in another Gulf country does not itself give UAE trademark coverage. Start with the exact sign and the goods or services for which UAE protection is sought. [1]

Prepare the overseas owner and local filing arrangements

MoET's registration service states that an owner outside the country must apply through a registration agent and attach a legal, notarised power of attorney. Confirm the required authentication and translation for the actual country of execution before signing. A distributor's commercial role should not be confused with the identity of the trademark owner. [1]

United Arab Emirates: decisions that shape your application

A Gulf launch often mixes incorporation, distribution and brand-protection decisions. Make the UAE filing scope explicit so each adviser works from the same owner and mark.

An English brand will appear alongside Arabic textReview each version actually usedPrepare the Latin spelling, proposed Arabic rendering, pronunciation and any combined logo. Ask the language reviewer to explain meaning and alternatives. Keep an unapproved translation visibly marked as a proposal.
Goods are sold through an importerSeparate the owner from the sales channelRecord who owns the brand and who imports or distributes the goods. Ask how the proposed authority to use the mark will be documented, without assuming that the importer should become the applicant.
One product range contains different functionsDescribe the individual offeringsList the products by ordinary commercial name and function, then have the class and wording reviewed. A general label such as 'consumer products' gives the reviewer too little information.

Planning example — not a client case

A homeware company plans a UAE distributor launch using a Latin word and an Arabic label. Its preparation file should show both name versions, the real brand-owning company, the distributor relationship and the products carrying each mark. Keep any proposed shop service separate from the goods. This gives the team distinct decisions about brand scope, representation and contractual use.

Prepare for a useful review

Prepare your United Arab Emirates application brief

Use this practical preparation list to connect the official procedure with the information your filing professional will need.

  1. Arabic and Latin artwork, with the proposed meaning and pronunciation.
  2. The owner's exact legal entity and the representative's current authority-document checklist.
  3. Emirate launch plans and the actual products or services; separate a trade licence from trademark instructions.
  4. Any earlier filing date, distributor agreement or existing objection that needs a separate assessment.

Planning example — not a client case

Brief example: for cosmetics with both Arabic and Latin labels, prepare a table with one row per offering and columns for the actual sign, intended owner, launch date and evidence already available. Attach the final artwork and list unresolved questions separately, so the reviewer can distinguish facts from assumptions.

Standard package

Application preparation, goods and services wording, filing-quality review, approved electronic filing and standard completion through initial registration, within the agreed scope.

Separate when needed

Non-standard official fees, translations, notarisation, objections, opposition and later maintenance are outside the standard scope unless expressly included.

Use Trademarkora's current published quote for the agreed normal registration scope. The official sources describe government charges and procedural steps; do not add those charges to a package again without checking what is included. Extra classes, disputed proceedings, exceptional document work and later maintenance require their own scope. No amount on an old official form should replace the current quote.

From application to registration

  1. 1

    1. Set the owner and search scope

Prepare the legal applicant details, mark image, products and proposed language versions. Commission a UAE-focused review of earlier marks and registrability before treating overseas clearance as sufficient. Keep the query scope and relevant record identifiers in the project file.

  2. 2

    2. Prepare the application and authority

MoET's service requests the mark image and applicable supporting documents. Outside-country applicants use an agent and the required power of attorney. Check names across the authority document and application; resolve document mismatches before filing. [1]

  3. 3

    3. Examination and correspondence

The Ministry assesses the application and may require action before acceptance. Keep the full notice, its date and the reviewer's response deadline together. Approval of the budget is not approval of an amendment to the mark or goods.

  4. 4

    4. Publication and possible opposition

An accepted mark is published before registration. The UAE law provides a 30-day opposition period from publication. Distinguish the publication event from a final certificate, and obtain advice promptly if a third party objects. [2]

  5. 5

    5. Complete registration and check the certificate

Complete the remaining official steps within the applicable notices. When the certificate arrives, compare the owner, mark and goods against the approved instructions. Save the certificate and official history as the starting point for maintenance.

Our service planning reference is 10–12 months for a straightforward application. This is not an official average or a deadline commitment. Document preparation, examination, objections or opposition can change the total time.

Prepare your application

This is our service-preparation checklist, confirmed 6 September 2026. It is separate from the official eligibility and procedural rules linked in this guide; requirements depend on the applicant and filing route.

Documents & details

  • Trademark details, including the applicant’s name and address, the mark, and the goods or services.
  • A scan of the business licence or personal ID.
  • Original signed and stamped power of attorney, with notarisation and legalisation.

Filing acknowledgement estimate
3–4 months

Electronic certificate

A filing acknowledgement is not a registration. Confirm the final checklist and schedule before approving a filing.

Plan the actual territory and filing route

Direct application

A national MoET application is the direct UAE route. UAE commercial activity may involve several emirates, but do not confuse local business licensing with this federal trademark process. [1]

International & neighbouring markets

The UAE is a Madrid member. An eligible international application can designate the UAE; protection still depends on UAE examination. [4]

The published filing prices on this page describe the standard direct application scope. A different route, additional territory or unusual requirement needs its own scope confirmation.

Keeping the registration in force

The UAE law provides ten-year protection and renewable terms. Calendar the renewal using the official record and seek instructions before expiry, rather than waiting for a sales launch or a distributor reminder. [2]

Keep a dated record of the mark as used on products, packaging and relevant commercial documents. If the logo, owner or address changes, ask which recordal or new application is appropriate before assuming the old registration covers the new position.

Treat distributor termination as a separate project: identify ongoing brand use, stock, marketplace listings and account access. A registration does not itself complete the practical handover of a sales channel.

Keep the owner’s details, actual use records and renewal dates organised. A dispute or official notice needs its own review; it is not included automatically in a standard filing.
