A UK trade mark registration protects the brand in the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man. It is not EU-wide protection. Prepare the owner, mark and intended goods or services, then review both registration requirements and possible earlier-right conflicts before filing. [1][5]

What address for service is required?

A new direct application needs a valid address for service in the UK, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands; the Isle of Man is also accepted. This is where official correspondence must reach you or your representative. An address requirement is not a rule that every foreign applicant must hire a UK lawyer, and it does not enlarge the territory protected. [2][1]

Prepare separate lists for today's products and the next planned launch. Give the reviewer a plain description of each product, who buys it and how the brand appears. Use this to agree the filing scope before payment, rather than relying on a short label such as lifestyle brand.

Describe the goods and the store separately

A product brand and a retail-service brand may be used by the same business, but they should not disappear into a vague description of 'online sales'.

List the goods carrying the mark and any retail activity offered under it.
Confirm the legal applicant and address-for-service arrangements.
Identify EU expansion separately so the UK filing scope is not mistaken for regional protection.

Hypothetical example: a UK shop sells its own bags and other makers' accessories. Supply product labels and storefront examples as different parts of the scope brief. The final specification needs review; the shop's name alone does not describe everything sold.

Standard package

Separate when needed

Non-standard official fees, translations, notarisation, objections, opposition and later maintenance are outside the standard scope unless expressly included.

UKIPO examines the application and checks for similar earlier marks. An examiner's objection and an opposition from another rights holder are different issues and require different responses. [1][4]

Publication
The normal opposition period is two months from publication. A potential opponent can extend its opportunity to three months by filing the prescribed notice within the initial period. Publication is therefore not the same as completed registration. [4]

Registration and records
Keep the registration details, exact goods and services, owner information and official correspondence together. When business plans change, review whether the existing scope still matches them. [1][3]

Direct application

Apply directly to UKIPO for UK protection. If you also need EU coverage, assess that separately; an EU filing is not a substitute for a new UK application. [1][5]

Keeping the registration in force

A UK registration must be renewed every ten years to remain in force. Keep a separate renewal reminder rather than depending only on mail reaching an old address. [1][2]

An uninterrupted five-year period without genuine UK use can support revocation, unless proper reasons apply. The initial use period runs from completion of registration, not simply the application date. Retain dated evidence of relevant use. [4]

Keep the owner’s details, actual use records and renewal dates organised. A dispute or official notice needs its own review; it is not included automatically in a standard filing.
