Trademark registration in Indonesia

Prepare an Indonesia trademark under the 2026 filing regulation, organise precise goods and services, monitor publication and preserve use evidence for the five-year non-use framework.

The short answer

What should you know before filing in Indonesia?

Indonesia's DGIP administers trademark applications through its electronic system. The preparation requirements include the applicant, mark and goods/services details. A local launch needs an Indonesia-specific search and specification review; an identical name search alone does not answer the registration question. [1]

Prepare the overseas owner and local filing arrangements

For an overseas owner, organise an Indonesian filing professional and confirm the authority, translation and applicant-document requirements for the chosen route. Give the representative the exact legal entity rather than only the trading name, plus earlier applications and the commercial product list. Confirm the final instructions before an online application is submitted. [1]

Rule update to know

Indonesia: decisions that shape your application

Indonesia changed its registration regulation in 2026, and its Constitutional Court previously changed the statutory non-use period. Keep current procedural information separate from old filing manuals and old summaries of the law.

Filing choices for Indonesia: situation, decision and practical implications
Your situationWhat to decideWhy it matters
Your product name is descriptive or localisedReview the actual Indonesian-facing signProvide the wording, any intended Bahasa Indonesia meaning and all logo versions. Explain what buyers see on the product and why the name was selected; a decorative logo may raise different questions from the words alone.
You sell a product and operate a platformSeparate the activities before class selectionDescribe the physical goods, the platform's function and any service sold to other businesses. Do not replace the product specification with a broad company description.
You found an older unused registrationCheck the current legal basis before a challengeThe Constitutional Court changed the relevant non-use period from three to five consecutive years. A cancellation analysis also needs the record, evidence and applicable exceptions; age alone does not establish non-use. [3]

Planning example — not a client case

A sports-accessory brand wants to sell bottles, clothing and a training app in Indonesia. It should prepare separate descriptions for each offering, the precise brand artwork and local-facing names. If a conflicting mark appears inactive, the team should preserve the search record and request a separate evidence-based review rather than treating silence online as proof of abandonment.

Prepare for a useful review

Prepare your Indonesia application brief

Use this practical preparation list to connect the official procedure with the information your filing professional will need.

  1. Mark artwork, local-facing wording and the exact legal applicant.
  2. A product list separating goods, software and other services.
  3. A current checklist under Regulation No. 5 of 2026.
  4. Dated evidence and official records if an older mark raises a non-use question.

Planning example — not a client case

Brief example: for sports goods accompanied by a training app, prepare a table with one row per offering and columns for the actual sign, intended owner, launch date and evidence already available. Attach the final artwork and list unresolved questions separately, so the reviewer can distinguish facts from assumptions.

How much does trademark registration in Indonesia cost?

For the agreed mark, applicant, classes and filing route, the published all-in package covers the normal process through initial registration, including standard professional work and government application and registration fees, when there is no office action, refusal or opposition. Responses to objections or disputes, changes to the agreed scope and post-registration maintenance are quoted separately.

Standard package

Application preparation, goods and services wording, filing-quality review, approved electronic filing and standard completion through initial registration, within the agreed scope.

Separate when needed

Non-standard official fees, translations, notarisation, objections, opposition and later maintenance are outside the standard scope unless expressly included.

Use Trademarkora's current published quote for the agreed normal registration scope. The official sources describe government charges and procedural steps; do not add those charges to a package again without checking what is included. Extra classes, disputed proceedings, exceptional document work and later maintenance require their own scope. No amount on an old official form should replace the current quote.

From application to registration

  1. 1

    Build the filing brief

DGIP's procedure page identifies the mark label, applicant information, relevant declarations and supporting documents. Organise these against the actual owner and proposed product list so the online entry reflects an approved scope. [1]

  2. 2

Confirm the current procedure and submit

DGIP reports that Minister of Law Regulation No. 5 of 2026 replaced the earlier 2016 regulation and took effect on 23 February 2026. Ask which current formalities and transitional provisions apply to this application, then retain its receipt. [2]

  3. 3

    Track publication and objections

DGIP describes a two-month publication stage in its 2026 procedure explanation. Check the official publication record and route any objection to the representative promptly. Save both the publication date and the notice-specific deadline. [2]

  4. 4

    Handle substantive examination

The 2026 DGIP explanation gives a 30–90 calendar-day substantive examination range. This is a described examination stage, not a guaranteed end-to-end registration time. Corrections, opposition and case-specific issues need their own assessment. [2]

  5. 5

    Verify the registered outcome

Check the owner, image, class and goods/services wording in the official result. Store the certificate and establish a renewal and use-evidence process before the application team closes the matter.

Our service planning reference is 14–16 months for a straightforward application. This is not an official average or a deadline commitment. Document preparation, examination, objections or opposition can change the total time.

Prepare your application

This is our service-preparation checklist, confirmed 6 September 2026. It is separate from the official eligibility and procedural rules linked in this guide; requirements depend on the applicant and filing route.

Documents & details

  • Trademark details, including the applicant’s name and address, the mark, and the goods or services.
  • A scan of the business licence or personal ID.
  • Power of attorney: signed, stamped, scan.
  • Include the legal representative’s ID with a company business licence, and translations of the identity documents.

A filing acknowledgement is not a registration. Confirm the final checklist and schedule before approving a filing.

Plan the actual territory and filing route

Direct application

A national application proceeds through DGIP's system with Indonesian requirements. Agree the specification and document checklist with the filing professional, including any priority claim and relevant earlier record. [1]

International & neighbouring markets

Indonesia is a Madrid member. Compare a designation with a national application, including local specification requirements and handling of any refusal. [6]

The published filing prices on this page describe the standard direct application scope. A different route, additional territory or unusual requirement needs its own scope confirmation.

Keeping the registration in force

In decision 144/PUU-XXI/2023 of 30 July 2024, the Constitutional Court replaced the three-year period in Article 74(1) with five consecutive years from registration or last use. It also addressed exceptions. Obtain a current legal assessment before relying on non-use to attack or defend a mark. [3]

DGIP publishes a specific renewal procedure. Record the expiry and prepare the required declarations and supporting details ahead of the filing window. Review the current renewal instructions rather than copying a previous cycle's pack unchanged. [4]

Keep dated sales, distribution and advertising records connected to the registered mark and Indonesian market. If the logo, owner or goods change, ask which recordal or further filing is appropriate; keep these decisions separate from a routine renewal.

Keep the owner’s details, actual use records and renewal dates organised. A dispute or official notice needs its own review; it is not included automatically in a standard filing.
